Have you ever wanted to do something really big, something really important but found it difficult to trust your gut and follow your heart?
Did you feel that uncertainty and shrink back or did the thought of what others might think influence your ability to take a real step forward and make a big impact for yourself and others?
To give your some added perspective let me share with you a little about my experience with such matters of purpose and direction.
These days when I look for something to align myself with I look for where the heart is. An indicator of heart is often the sense of warmth, the sense of unified spirit, the feeling of connection for a greater collective outcome.
About 6 years ago I made a concerted decision to expand the scope of my work into the corporate world. A decision, for someone so deeply engrained in the healing and transformational arts community, that seemed counter intuitive to our countercultural ideals.
But for me I chose not to see the two worlds as anything different. I took a leap of faith and followed the first (and the greatest) opportunity I got to step into it. I landed a job as a facilitator for Juno Consulting, coaching executives, predominantly from financial institutions, about the benefits of emotional intelligence, adaptive leadership and systemic thinking.
The program I went on to present involved teaming executives up with long term unemployed people in an effort to provide 3+ months of mentoring. The executive mentors would have a leadership experience completely out of their comfort zone and the unemployed protégés would receive added support – in most cases enough to get them across the line and back into work. Simply put, we build better leaders whilst driving community outcomes through social responsibility projects funded by large corporations.
At first I felt like a chameleon in a suit – like I was letting the team down. But very quickly I understood that my ability to shape shift was primarily where my true power lay.
With every piece of content I was asked to deliver, even if I cringed, I asked myself, “How does this align specifically with my true purpose”. At the time it was awakening. By asking that question I found a permissive gateway to drop my frequency of change into some of the most iron clad social (and energetic) systems we know – BANKS!
I trusted, and despite its challenges, and some serious feather ruffling, my role evolved, and soon I was entrusted in facilitating this work in my way. To be honest the only way I truly knew possible.
Time has passed and these days I operate as a Senior Associate Leadership Facilitator, Coach and Consultant hired out to large organisations alongside running my own independent program for world-changing entrepreneurs – Mastery Matrix®.
The other evening I attended the graduation for the 29th Adaptive Leadership program I have facilitated.
WE GOT 100% of the long term unemployed protégés into gainful employment in just 12 weeks.
100%!!!
Something happened this time, which was different to most times previous. The team truly clicked. They found common purpose. They faced the challenges that one faces when you face up to your shit, own your failings, get vulnerable, claim responsibility and work as a unified system. It was profound to observe.
So what made this team different?
WARMTH and HEART.
You see where there is heart there is warmth and where there is heart there is unity and where there is unity there is collective power – and the result was 100% community RESULTS.
These days my purpose is purpose. I feel I have aided the accomplishment of awakening on the planet as much as I needed to. Part of that is helping overly altruistic execs realise that the true path of personal growth is when we do it together – not others first or us first but instead all of us together as ONE.
So often I meet execs who know it all. They think their role means they’re all over this life and business thing. My greatest joy is helping them realise that the wisdom and intelligence of their heart and gut is what qualifies them – NOT their title.
AND know this – the corporate world is not cold. Amongst the bankers, the bean counters, the high flyers is also a bunch of heart centred, awesome individuals. Light workers who didn’t even know they were until their efforts were appropriately channelled.
29 programs and still the collective heart takes me by surprise and teaches me something about the world, about people and our potential to do endless good when focused through common PURPOSE.
Have a look at this photo and show me the difference between those who came out of unemployment and the corporate mentors.
This is what happens when we work together. When we truly cast aside our judgements to achieve a collective goal and realise we are all but one system, with each individual wanting the same thing – to express their true potential.
There were tears in the speeches. There were passionate outcries for others to learn and know that when we drop our bias and do something completely different, MAGIC HAPPENS.
Oops did I just quote a hippy bumper-sticker in the depths of explaining my journeys into corporate facilitation?
When I made the choice to expand my offerings to the executive field, many people in my creative communities ridiculed and judged me for selling out. I’d get poked and reprimanded by some of my old peeps at lifestyle events or on dance floors at festivals by people who suffered from the same social bias as those assumed corporate ideals they thought they stood against.
Sure, when I started down the corporate path as a diversification to my business I thought I might risk losing myself. Instead I found myself bridging worlds, bringing all of myself into all my offerings and further honing my skills to influence change by simply being ME.
I’m here to tell you the “Us and them” mentality is WRONG! And when you drop it you get real ABUNDANCE (oops another bumper-sticker) and real outcomes.
I can’t wait to start the next Adaptive Leadership program – my 30th with a newcomer client to our program who are passionate about purpose-driven leadership.
The world is changing and if you open your eyes and drop your preconceptions you can see it AND be a part of it.
The man pictured with me is my colleague and partner in crime Mr Tim Roberts, to whom congratulations are so necessary. He’s one of the most beautiful, talented and well meaning light workers I know and yes, he’s wearing a suit. The work he does with long-term unemployed is so valuable.
The message here…
If you want to help create real systemic change you need to take a leap, trust your gut, flirt with a cause and do something different. You need to ask the kind of questions that connect you deeply with your personal path of purpose. You need to forget what others may think or say about how you do that and you need to drop your biases and search for a greater truth in the world. You need to be yourself, all of what you bring and trust in that.
If you do you might start to realise that the bumper sticker is right – MAGIC HAPPENS!
What’s more is, you are the centre of that magic – it’s waiting for you to make it happen.
