Do you feel ‘spread thin’, as though there’s not enough of you to go round? Here’s why and what you can do about it.
It’s all about Impact
If you’re not focused in your business and creative pursuits, you will lack impact.
Impact is the result of your expression or creation of something.
Anything you express or create starts from having an intention. Depending on how much the end result actually reflects that intention, will determine a measurement of success or impact.
Knowing your Key Area of Impact in life – the one thing that you are more likely to succeed at more than anything else – is essential to keep you on track towards success. It acts like a pathfinder or what I call an, Impact Compass. It helps you focus your creative energy, attention and personal resources.
One of the things that can happen when you’re not focused in life, that is, when you don’t have an Impact Compass, is that you can end up feeling spread thin. Like there is never enough of you to go round.
We are driven to spreading ourselves thin because of one popular misconception.
The big misconception about having a whole and complete life and what it can lead to
One of the biggest misconceptions about living a whole and complete life is thinking that every part of your life needs your full attention in order for you to be fulfilled.
We act as though every area of life needs to have some sort of equal focus to achieve overall success, and that that will lead to you feeling whole and complete.
The reality is that this approach has the polar opposite effect. It can actually leave you feeling fragmented and empty.
The conscious mind can only process about seven chunks of information per second. If you consider that your whole life is made up of ten or more different life areas (chunks of information) and each of those life areas has a number of potential activities present within each of those areas, it’s just not possible to be fully present in any one part of your life AND be present to it all equally. It’s cognitively not possible and your mind – your conscious mind – cannot deal with it.
When we overload the conscious mind we end up feeling distracted, scattered, tired, low on energy, we can’t meet our own needs, and sometimes use procrastination as a secondary gain. In this case you end up thinking, “Oh well, I’m just not going to do anything and then I don’t have to be responsible for any of it”. Eventually your primary needs don’t get met and you may end up resenting things that you usually love, like relationships, work, or creative pursuits.
Being spread thin is one of the major problems that people come to me with when all they need is an Impact Compass.
You need focus
When you know your Key Area of Impact and go for it, rather than feeling spread thin, you will experience lazer-sharp focus.
I always say: Focus primarily on your top three or four life areas and identify one area that’s emerging and give that a little time.
When your energy, awareness, creative spark and unwavering attention is focused in this way, it brings about amplified results. It can’t not! So much so that every other area of your life will start to rise to a renewed sense of fulfillment, which is precisely what you want.
Lazer-sharp focus is what you need to cultivate.
