Are you vitalised and focused everyday? Is the direction you’re taking in business and life fulfilling you?
If not, it may be that you don’t know or live by your core Values, what’s really most important to you?
Think of life like a masterpiece. Like a priceless work of art made up of all these smaller components and each of which is in itself also a creative expression, or a work of art within itself. This is the concept of Values.
Lets discuss the difference between Values and Ideals and why it’s so important to know your Values AND live by them.
The parts that make up your whole
Values are the many parts and areas of your life that make up the whole of your life. Values are what you DO that’s important to you.
You could call them life behaviours because they’re definitely more akin to the act element of the Think, Feel and Act model.
They’re the things you talk about; they’re the things you think about, the things you invest your money into, you invest your time into, you invest your energy into, and you get energy from. It’s where you’re most organised, inspired and naturally enthusiastic.
Values are the things that when you do them, you feel more alive and you feel more yourself than ever. They’re indicated by life areas, which I’m going to go through in a moment, but things like work and career, health and fitness, hobbies and recreation, and finance, that kind of thing.
So what’s important for your to with your life is going to come under the banner of specific life areas or groups of activities and things that you do that are your values.
Not to be confused with Ideals
Now, the thing is that Values often get confused with Ideals. Often when you ask people, “Well, what do you value?”, they say things like achievement, honour, respect, connection, love, happiness etc. But these are Ideals, right?
Ideals are more ‘being’ states.
The research
So there’s plenty of research conducted on values and our relationship to them. I think the most intriguing is of the Demartini Institute where they’ve released people’s values and then sent them off to do activities that were totally aligned with their values, and sent the same people off to do things that were totally misaligned.
What they did was they put monitors on their neurology, on their nervous system, and what they found was that our neurology fires at the level of genius when we’re aligned with our values. We experience the biochemistry necessary to feel vitalized, energised, joyful, content, excited, connected, focused and all those cool things.
They also found that the neurology slows down and can become highly incompetent when we’re not aligned with our values, when we’re actually carrying out activities that are not of value to us. Our biochemistry can induce states like lethargy, depression, sadness, irritability, anger, disconnection, attention deficit and all those kind of experiences.
So there’s a lot to Values. The science behind it suggests that our body, our being and our well being relates directly to our Values and how much our life revolves around them, how much we reward them and fulfill them.
