My confession
Yes, I have a confession to make.
I am a ‘State Junkie”. I really am.
I love the intensity of life. Even when it rocks me sideways. Even when it stresses me, I’m conscious that a part of me gets off on the various states that I access during the day.
The thing is, most people are state junkies. It’s just that I’m being honest about it.
We all get a certain amount of juice, a certain amount of pleasure or gain, from the variation of emotional and mental states that we experience during the day. Regardless of whether it’s total motivation or it’s overwhelming stress.
Even the so-called negative states, we still get some sort of juice from them, some sort of secondary gain. It serves us on some level and we enjoy the intensity of it. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t choose to feel those states. It’s just that simple.
State is a choice
The question is; are we consciously in control of our state, or is it an unconscious mechanism or reaction?
Is your state something that you just find yourself in, or is it something that you choose to be in, or is it something that you call forward, and activate within yourself consciously?
Either way, no matter how you look at it, state is a choice. Whether conscious or unconscious, it’s still just a choice.
We choose what and how we feel, and when we feel it. And that’s totally fine. Unless of course, the state you choose holds you back and hinders you, rather than propelling you forward in your business, your creativity and in life.
Recalling is easy. Remembering is hard.
I’ve been consulting very closely for a while now with senior executives from major corporations in the field of Adaptive Leadership and Emotional Intelligence. In that time I’ve coached nearly 500+ execs both one-on-one and in groups.
A question that I always ask my groups is, “How many of you before a meeting actually take a minute to check in with yourself, and ask yourself what and how you need to be thinking, feeling and acting in order to maximize your outcome?”
I’m always curious as to how many people actually take themselves aside for a minute to get clear on these specifics, so that they can access what they need before going into an important meeting.
Do you know what? It’s generally somewhere in the vicinity of about 1 in 20 people that will say, “Oh, yes. I do that regularly.”
It’s a bit of a no-brainer really. Recalling forward the states you need so you can access them in the moment is actually super easy.
The hard part is just remembering to do it.
My message here is that your state is a choice that happens by you bringing awareness to the state you wish to access.
Resourceful states are immediately accessible by considering 3 things:
1. What do you need to be thinking,
2. What do you need to be feeling, and
3. How do you need to be acting (or behaving) in order to create the experience that you want to create?
State is a choice, and what’s more is it’s a bit like being in a lollie shop. There is so many different states to choose from, and different combinations that you can experience also.
The choice, of course, is always yours and it immediately dictates your personal experience and the outcomes you achieve.
So choose your state wisely.
