Something that many people experience in business, but very few actually admit or talk about, is the fear of failure.
Now this is something present even for many successful and accomplished entrepreneurs and professionals.
After years of assisting people to overcome these obstacles I really started to ask myself “WHY?”
“Why is this something so present for inspired, achievement oriented business people?”
It kind of doesn’t make sense.
And here’s what I’ve noticed.
People who are continually open to pushing themselves to achieve more are continually expanding outside of their comfort zone.
Which means they’re constantly rubbing up against their limitations, their self-beliefs and their relationship to their past events.
Now if you’ve ever experienced past personal failures, mishaps, business dealings and ventures gone wrong, and haven’t properly resolved that stuff – it’s always going to come up EVERY time you go to play a bigger game in business and life.
It can’t not.
Most achievers deal with this stuff by denying it, repressing it and shifting into super-hero mode which leads to hustle, frustration, taking on more than you can handle and generally over extending yourself.
In a way it’s the achiever in you pushing up against the part of you that feels shame about your past failures.
Which funnily enough brings up even more of your past limitations extending your further into frustration.
It’s a vicious cycle.
It leads to anxiety, indecision, procrastination and self-doubt.
Which impacts your ability to move on opportunities quickly, scale your business and get your work and your message out the to the world.
So today I want to give you 3 quick steps to catch this stuff as it comes up and reframe your experience so you can have the clarity, confidence and courage to mindfully let go of this limitation in the moment
To stop your past contaminating your future, you need to flip that experience.
Here’s 3 steps to help you get on top of this…
Step 1. Be self-aware
You need to get good at seeing when it surfaces for you or when you find yourself going over past experiences in your head.
Remember where attention goes, your energy flows and influences your outcomes in business and life.
If you give your past failures your attention, that’s what you’ll continually create.
Catch yourself in the moment when you feel it holding you back or you dwell on past negative experiences.
Step 2. You need to reframe your experience
Let the following reframe land for you…
“Your fear of failure is your love of success in disguise!”
Now, tune into the feeling and sensation of success.
You know what it feels like.
Tune into your sense of purpose – the direction you’re heading with your greatest strengths and skills.
Where that can take you.
Let yourself really go there.
Revel in the idea of how amazing it is to succeed and to follow your path of purpose and then tune into what you wish to succeed in specifically.
Visualise yourself succeeding.
Hold firm in that vision of your successful outcome.
Indulge in the feeling of success, where it will lead you and notice how anxiety quickly transforms into excitement.
Take your time and let it happen.
It’s a practice remember.
Step 3. Now ask yourself, “Is this old fear rational?”
If it is, it’s easy, you need more information to navigate your business with greater certainty and safety – simple as that.
If it’s irrational move to Step 4.
Step 4. Take positive action.
So in Step 4 ask yourself another question, “If I didn’t have this fear what three things would I do now with total certainty and confidence?”
Whatever they are, do them, feel the fear and do it any way.
You’ll congratulate yourself on the other side and may even laugh at the illusion of that old fear.
So that’s it – you have just flipped your fear of failure and will now feel more free to succeed or at least armed with more information to navigate these next steps in playing a bigger game.
Lastly, I just want to say – go easy on yourself!
Be conscious of when you’re business moves are genuine or when they are desperate examples of you trying to prove yourself to friends, family, business partners, clients etc
You have nothing to prove.
At the end of the day the world just wants you to be YOU.
When you’re in a space of authentic self-acceptance you’re in a more empowering place to create successfully.
You’re more confident and magnetic.
Fear is replaced with a sense of adventure.
